Well here I am again in good 'ole Washington, DC!
After traveling up the North Carolina coast I am back in DC again for some more enlivening conversation and hot coffee in bed! Of course finding stimulating company to join me in my endeavors is never a problem in this town! My problem is having to make choices so that I can get out to explore more than the hotel lobby while I am in town.
As for my time in North Carolina I enjoyed exploring new territory as well as some old spots. Ashville is still one of my favorite stops as I enjoy the youthful, funky and hippie-like atmosphere along with the wonderful simple country folks who take pride in their heritage and community. I visited the wonderful farmers market and bought some yummy heirloom tomatoes, Amish made sweet pickles and a hand carved walking stick by a gentleman who was carving them right in front of me.
Wilmington, NC was my next stop and I couldn't have picked a hotter day to get there. The hot wind made it feel like I was in an oven! Very busy beachside community reminding me of Boca Raton with the stretches of wide roads, fast drivers and over-inflated house prices!
My time in Moorehead City and Beaufort was brief but nice. The soft-shell crab at Sharpies is marvelous but the nightlife left something to be desired. Be sure to go with friends when you travel there.
The ferry to Ocracoke was wet and long. Ocracoke reminded me of Nantucket with the lovely little wood cottages, lush flowers and trees encroaching the dirt roads and very small town-like community feel. Howard's restaurant (advertising that they are open 365 days a year) serves up yummy seafood...especially the yellowfin tuna! I enjoyed camping out at the state park campground that lines the beach there just outside of town. The wide stretch of beach is great for long walks!
The ferry to Hatteras was fun and not as long as the ride to Ocracoke (only 15 min) and the visit to the lighthouse was intersting. I spent a brief time on the beach sunning myself, but unfortunately I had to keep my bathingsuit on! I can't handle maditory clothing only beaches anymore! I am planning on getting nude somewhere in New England.....I'll let you know how that goes! : )
Well.....I am going to sign off for now! : )
Stay cool!
XOXOXOXOX
Emma
