Getting Stimulated

Original posting on June 12, 2008

Hot title....are you excited yet??? Well, now that you are one of the lucky recipients of your tax "stimulus" check why not spend it getting stimulated??? Gimme a call sometime baby!!

Sorry, I just needed to make myself laugh (and hopefully you cracked a smile too) and a good friend initially made the stimulus check remark to me and I thought I should really use it in my blog. One more.....corny joke I heard last week when Dustin Hoffman (who is one of my favorite actors) pitched this one.... Two cannibals were dining on a clown. The one cannibal says to the other cannibal "This tastes kinda funny."

What's with this economy? I don't understand....Pres. Bush keeps telling us, Americans, that the economy is doing so well. I have to wonder if he is talking about Europe instead of the United States because no one I know or even people downtown are saying anything positive these days about their own financial situation.

The thought of working for $10 hr. (the same pay I earned in 1995 as a secretary) for some blood-sucking leech who is aspiring to seek Jack Welch fortunes by exploiting his labor force & other underhanded (but legal I am sure) business practices just makes me cringe!!! I just can't do it anymore. It is hard to live with principles.

I know not everyone who owns a business treats their employees so badly. I was one of those employers who was grateful for any help! When I ran my little retail shop I had a volunteer come and help me out from time to time (she loved my stuff) and I was always gifting her things from the shop or buying her lunch and drinks at night if we went out after the shop closed. I really valued her spirit and passion for wanting to help people in the third world. She is off now living back in one of those countries now. She couldn't stand "civilization" as we live it in the states. I understand. I miss her!!!

Well...wishing everyone sweet & prosperous dreams tonight!!!

Cruelty and Compassion

Original posting June 5, 2008

Well, this is no secret....the economy is not good. A year ago I was traveling around in my van having a great time touring the Outter Banks, WV, upstate NY, VT, MA and in particular Martha's Vineyard.

40 years ago Americans were celebrating the "Summer of Love".......I hardly think this summer will be labeled the "Summer of Love 2" for we are facing higher fuel & energy prices, more job losses, higher food prices, and a real economic meltdown.

In my ad I state that escorting is not my profession. This is true. It is not. I am an educator of sorts-an activist I guess. My life's purpose is to educate people and to heal people (to the extent that one wants my healing gifts).
I live rather simply...trying not to collect stuff that I won't use on a regular basis and I don't consider myself a shopper. I would rather spend my time watching documentary films (especially relating to history or political concepts), reading books and sharing what I know with others and learning from people who are DOING and not just complaining or being a victim of life's current circumstances.

Honestly, I am not motivated to make money to buy stuff for myself. But I do need money to educate myself & others, have free time to read, watch & learn, to help grassroots organizations or individuals who are like me (dedicated to bringing hope & justice to the masses). I even sold my house to become a full-time activist and luckily I was able to support myself w/ the profits of my house sale for a while. I don't feel like I have lost anything.....I am lucky that I know what my calling is. Most people go through their whole life not knowing what their purpose was...now that is tragic!

I will say lately I have had my fair share of disappointments. People that I considered well-meaning and had their heart in the right place have lied and stolen from me. I was getting ready to get involved in doing prison education work and I loaned out a good number of videos to my soon-to-be business partner and out of the blue she denied having had my videos. I don't know what to say about it really.... but I am upset I have lost my materials which are costly to replace.

What is more cruel than having a work partner betray me is having someone pose as an interested client, set up a time to meet, have me drive to a meeting destination and then that person not show or call. That is what happened today. I have to ask......"Why would someone play such a mean, cruel joke on someone else....much less someone like me?" I mean, what did I do to deserve such a malicious trick? I can maybe see such a devious act perpetrated on an enemy....but to do this to someone you don't even know????

I called the person at our arranged time. They said business came up which interrupted the plan. So, no call....nothing. Meanwhile, I had to call my trainer and cancel our weekly scheduled appt., got all dressed up, drove 45 min. down to my destination, filled up my gas tank, and then drove 45 min. home. Really.....there is something wrong with a man (or woman) who treats another with utter disrespect and callousness.

The only silver lining that came in to help me alter my mood was arriving home to see a lovely bouquet of flowers that were delivered to me. I am so grateful that someone I have met through my escorting sees me for who I am....a well-meaning, upstanding and caring woman who only wants to give to others and share in the experience called "LIFE".

My friend Mark calls me an angel ... well, to recite a wonderful quote from my childhood repertoire "It takes one to know one". Thanks my angel, Mark !!!

As I reflect on my current life situation....wondering where I should be channeling my positive energy at least I have my flowers to look at and smile and know everything will work out just fine. : )

A Little Humor : )

Original posting May 31, 2008

Ok....I couldn't pass up this funny that a friend sent me..... I love a good sense of humor!!! Enjoy.....

GEOGRAPHY OF A WOMAN

Between 18 and 22, a woman is like Africa, half discovered, half wild, naturally beautiful with fertile soil.

Between 23 and 30, a woman is like America, well developed and open to trade, especially for someone with cash.

Between 31 and 35, a woman is like India, very hot, relaxed and convinced of her own beauty.

Between 36 and 40, a woman is like France, gently aging; but still warm and a desirable place to visit.

Between 41 and 50, a woman is like Great Britain, with a glorious and all conquering past.

Between 51 and 60, a woman is like Yugoslavia, lost some wars, won some great battles but haunted by past mistakes, still very strong and proud.

Between 61 and 70, a woman is like Russia, very wide and borders are now largely un-patrolled.

After 70, she becomes Tibet. Off the beaten path, with a mysterious past and the wisdom of the ages...still desirable but only those with an adventurous spirit and a thirst for spiritual knowledge and true love dare visit there.

GEOGRAPHY OF A MAN

Between 1 and 78, a man is like Myanmar, ruled by a dick (at present).

Deborah's Last Days...

Original posting May 24, 2008

I can't help think of Deborah since hearing of her suicide a few weeks ago. Reading the news a few hrs. after her death was announced to the public just sent shivers up my spine.

I can't fathom the anxiety and stress Deborah must have been under, but I do know the depth of fear and loneliness she fell into on the day she decided to end her life.

I am just so sorry for her that she felt death was her only option to avoid prison time for her second stint. Prison is not where Deborah belonged this is true. There are a lot of people walking free who have actually committed "real" crimes....waging illegal wars, dumping toxic waste improperly, weakening automobile frames for big profits, corporations that cannot account for taxpayer dollars for no-bid govt. contracts, and allowing the oil industry to speculate on oil prices in the future...who BELONG behind bars but Deborah was not one of them. This is America.

My heart goes out to the Palfrey family. My heart goes out to all the ladies who put their lives in jeopardy every day so they can earn enough money to cover the rising cost of living, raising children and having fewer and fewer opportunities to make a living wage in a societally-"acceptable" way. My heart also goes out to those women who genuinely enjoy providing the kind of nurturing and positive attention men (and women) NEED to keep sane and keep going on...living the lives they have chosen for themselves. I consider myself in the latter group and I am grateful that I am naturally able to give myself to others.....we all know it is not an easy or comfortable situation to undertake but aren't you glad there are some who can and do it with an open heart?

So.....Deborah....your spirit goes on and you will not be forgotten as long as I walk through this bizarre thing called "life".

PEACE...........Emma

DC....What a Great City

Original posting May 16, 2008

Washington, DC is one of my favorite cities to visit. I just love the culture, architecture, history and the political vibe of the city! It is virtually impossible to sit down in a restaurant and not overhear some political talk going on.....such a rare occasion where I live.

The weather was spectacular on this trip (unlike last June where it was pretty hot I thought) and I just loved the smell of the greenery after the rain fell.

I am grateful for such a busy schedule but it kept me from my usual long visit to the National Gallery and was unable to visit the new "Newseum" (museum of news) so I will plan a day off next trip.

Here I am standing next to the statue of one of my favorite past leaders...Gandhi!!! What a beautiful, gentle soul he was.

It is good to be back home and back on track with my trainer. I feel like even with my one week absence w/o my trainer I haven't skipped a beat. My workout was intense and my form was much better yesterday than it has ever been. It is amazing how the body tries so hard to compensate and cheat to make the exercise less difficult to do. But, yesterday I noticed I was not shifting my body out of proper form like I used to do.

The waves are picking up so I will take my board out tomorrow and catch a few!!! SURF'S UP !!!

Political Labels? No Thanks !!

Original posting April 24, 2008

It is so funny....if I had a dime for every time someone labeled me a Democrat I would be lounging on the beaches of Maui drinking a Fuzzy Navel and tanning my lovely naked body right now.

I love the quote by Soren Kierkegaard "Once you label me, you negate me". I work very hard at not labeling others because so often in the past I was not only wrong about my assessment of a person but my labeling of them caused me to avoid seeing where I might have a connection with that person.So..I will set the record straight...I am not a Democrat (I think I was when I first registered to vote in '92 and did vote that year for that philandering, scoundrel Clinton that is, but I was too young and ignorant to know that I should read about a candidate's voting record, work history or their affiliations so that I can vote for the BEST candidate for the job.

Now that I am older and wiser and have had my vote denied me by the Supreme Court in the 2000 election, I have done enough reading and talking with the masses of people to understand that Americans are more alike than the one word labels they give themselves.....

Most people are fiscally conservative and privately liberal. Unfortunately our elected politicians are just the opposite....but it serves their real constituents...the BIG donors! I don't care what party someone is in...invariably everyone wants these basic things....1. A job that pays a living wage 2. A school system that teaches young ones to be critical and creative thinkers and good citizens 3. A nice community to feel safe in & a part of 4. Access to health care which is a human right & should not be based on profit margins and 5. The right to privacy & less govt. intrusion in our daily lives.

As long as elections are NOT strictly publicly funded we will continue to have a corporate run country. Why is a corporate run country an unwise idea? Because they operate in a top-down tyrannical fashion and their sole reason for being is to MAKE MONEY. Now...if we run our society like a corporation well...I think we are seeing how that works...not very well for the masses but very well for a few (million) people.

What I am hopeful of is that when the masses have suffered enough we only have to look into our history or look to our neighbors to see how things can be done to nurture ourselves, communities and our planet. I am very hopeful we can get beyond the idea of labels to make the best choices for the majority of human beings which ultimately helps us all live better and more peacefully.

Wishing you a "label-free" day !!!

In Memory of a King

Original posting April 4, 2008

41 years ago (a year to the day MLK, Jr. was assassinated) Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. spoke at Riverside Church. Here is an excerpt from his speech..."Beyond Vietnam"

"I am convinced that if we are to get on the right side of the world revolution, we as a nation must undergo a radical revolution of values. When machines and computers, profit and property rights are considered more important than people, the giant triplets of racism, materialism, and militarism are incapable of being conquered.

A true revolution of values will soon cause us to question the fairness and justice of many of our past and present policies. True compassion is more than flinging a coin to a beggar; it is not haphazard and superficial. It comes to see that an edifice which produces beggars needs restructuring. A true revolution of values will soon look easily on the glaring contrast of poverty and wealth. With righteous indignation, it will look across the seas and see individual capitalists of the West investing huge sums of money in Asia, Africa and South America, only to take the profits out with no concern for the social betterment of the countries, and say: "This is not just.” It will look at our alliance with the landed gentry of Latin America and say: ” This is not just.” The Western arrogance of feeling that it has everything to teach others and nothing to learn from them is not just. A true revolution of values will lay hands on the world order and say of war: “This way of settling differences is not just.” This business of burning human beings with napalm, of filling our nation’s homes with orphans and widows, of injecting poisonous drugs of hate into the veins of peoples normally humane, of sending men home from dark and bloody battlefields physically handicapped and psychologically deranged, cannot be reconciled with wisdom, justice, and love. A nation that continues year after year to spend more money on military defense than on programs of social uplift is approaching spiritual death.

America, the richest and most powerful nation in the world, can well lead the way in this revolution of values. There is nothing, except a tragic death wish, to prevent us from re-ordering our priorities, so that the pursuit of peace will take precedence over the pursuit of war. There is nothing to keep us from molding a recalcitrant status quo until we have fashioned it into a brotherhood."

How sad it is that if you exchanged Vietnam with Iraq and cut out any mention of "communism" that this speech would be fitting to give to Americans today! Will we ever learn?
Will we come to consciousness before it is too late? I still have hope....maybe that is enough we shall see.

How blessed we, Americans, have been to have had the life of MLK, Jr. for the time we did. He was a great man and a great inspirational leader!

peace,
Emma

Another Year Older

Original posting April 2, 2008

Well...I am officially 40 !!! I had a nice birthday complete with some close friends, wine, yummy food and my first ever vegan chocolate birthday cake! My roommate made it and it was darn delicious!!!

A very, very dear friend out in Seattle sent me the most beautiful roses I have ever seen!!! They really were spectacular and they even smelled like they should...heavenly!!

Have I noticed a difference in myself as a result of my entrance into my fourth decade? Yes, I have decided to hold people up to the same standards I hold myself to when being a friend to someone. I value friends dearly and there isn't anything I won't do for a TRUE friend but I have had a couple experiences with a few close friends recently that has left me wondering what kind of friend they are to be so disrespectful of me.

I am not a big fan of Dr. Phil but sometimes he has a gem or two to share and this is one of them.... "We teach people how to treat us." Isn't that the truth!
So my new rule (for myself) is not to let people believe they can disrespect me. I certainly don't allow people I have just met to do so...so why would I let people close to me do it?

It is a new day!!!

5 Years Later...

Original posting March 19, 2008

Yes, I feel compelled to be a bit political today. So you timid folks may wish to skip this blog.

I deplore war. Because of what I do I am a natural at being a loving person. I meet people all the time who say "It is human nature is to wage war." I say "No it is not." We are taught to fight just as we are taught to express love. It is my belief that because Americans are exposed to so much violence (mostly in the form of entertainment) we believe that it is just human nature to fight. As a woman and understanding a mother's love for her child it is not instinctive for her to teach her child to be violent. The greater society teaches that.

I was against our invasion of Iraq before we went in 5 years ago today. I am a peace activist who believes that the only thing war accomplishes is to DESTROY. War destroys minds, bodies, cities, vital infrastructures (water & electric sources, hospitals, schools, houses) and societies.

But in order to understand why wars are waged you have to look at who wages them. Who benefits from wars? Certainly military contractors do as well as recipients of "NO BID CONTRACTS" for infrastructure rebuilding. How are wars funded? Taxpayer dollars and borrowing from foreign governments (like China). Economists estimate over 2 Trillion dollars will be spent to pay for our invasion of Iraq. That debt will be paid back by our children and our grandchildren.

Wars are waged for resources. Oil is obviously the main resource we are fighting to own in the Middle East. In Chile in 1973 we needed to protect our copper interests in that country as well as keep socialists governments from establishing themselves in the Western Hemisphere so we helped (fund and arm) a dictator to take over that democratically elected President.

Living a 1st World lifestyle involves possessing enough resources to keep up the lifestyle. I think if we are truly concerned with the future of the United States of America we each have to re-think how we live and at what cost are we willing to pay to continue waging wars to keep our affluent lifestyles.

I look around me now (at a coffee shop) and notice not many people are smiling. When I talk to people, for the most part, they are over-worked and unhappy about their individual lives. While the cost of "living" (I think the appropriate term is "surviving") has gone up the value of the dollar has gone down and without taking on a second job they just don't know how they are going to afford basic necessities and save money (which doesn't happen today) for the future.

We cannot afford to continue our war on terror. It is just BAD ECONOMICS and BAD POLITICS. I find it amazing that terrorists never seem to target countries like Denmark or Finland or Ireland. Why not? Maybe because they do not wage invasions on other countries. Maybe we could learn from them how they manage to provide 1st World lifestyles without waging wars for the resources to keep their societies functioning so well.

Just a thought.

Bring our sons and daughters home NOW!I

n peace & love,

Emma : )

Happy Spring 2008

Original post on March 25, 2008

Happy Spring everyone!!! I just love this time of year....don't you??? It is rather cool right now for Fla. (in the upper 40's early this a.m.) with a strong NE wind blowing.Last Sat. night I drove down to Vero Beach to watch the full moon rise and meet a girlfriend at a bar on the beach where we had a drink and went for sushi. I brought my camera to try to capture the beauty of the moon over the ocean..it was so romantic looking. I hope you like the picture!
In two days I will be 40.....I am anxious but excited at the same time. I recall how upset I was at turning 30 but soon after my birthday I began to feel more self-empowered and in time I could see how I was blossoming as a strong, bold, self-confident and fun person. All I hear from women in their 40's is how wonderful their lives became as they entered that decade. GREAT....BRING IT ON : )

Ok, if you all have not heard about a fantastic free music website called Pandora Radio....you gotta check it out. www.pandora.com uninterrupted music that you choose! NO COMMERCIALS...YEA! So I am sitting here listening to Pandora while typing this blog and a lovely song comes on. It is Simon and Garfunkel - "April Come She Will"I love these lyrics....

April
come she will
When streams are ripe and swelled with rain;
May
she will stay
Resting in my arms again;
June
she´ll change her tune
In restless walks she´ll prowl the night;
July
she will fly
And give no warning to her flight;
August
die she must
The autumn winds blow chilly and cold;
September
I´ll remember
A love once new has now grown old.

I think this song is on the film "The Graduate" which is a FAVORITE film of mine. Mike Nichols cinematography work is AMAZING in it!

Well, that is all for today....check back again soon : )
